On March 31st, the Polytechnic Institute of Porto (P.PORTO) hosted the first “National Meeting of Good Practices in Student Accommodation”, dedicated to the National Plan for Accommodation in Higher Education (PNAES).
The event, organized in partnership between the Institute for Higher Education (IES, IP) and P.PORTO, aimed to discuss and present new national responses to the growing need for affordable accommodation for students from outside the region.
The session provided an opportunity to analyze the practical impact of the PNAES, an initiative driven by funds from the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR).
At the heart of the discussion was the joint effort to create modern infrastructure at regulated prices, with concrete examples such as the expansion plan of P.PORTO itself, which aims to significantly increase its capacity to respond.
The debate began with speeches by Paulo Pereira, President of the Polytechnic Institute of Porto, and Joaquim Mourato, President of the Board of Directors of the Institute for Higher Education, IP (IES, IP), focusing on three fundamental pillars for the future of Higher Education in Portugal: the democratization of access, environmental sustainability, and the strengthening of social action. The meeting brought together a diverse range of strategic stakeholders, uniting leaders of higher education institutions, government and regional representatives, technical experts, and leaders in the field of social action.
Beyond the auditorium debate, the event also stood out for promoting a Best Practices Exhibition in Student Accommodation, designed to give visibility to innovative projects already developed or underway. This space for reflection allowed for the sharing of experiences and the recognition of effective and inspiring solutions that actively contribute to the qualification and modernization of the sector.
